Louisiana judge suspended for “deadbeat dad” campaign ad and failure to disclose payments on campaign finance report: Extra content #52

Rejecting the judge’s First Amendment argument and her argument that the Judiciary Commission had no jurisdiction over campaign finance violations, the Louisiana Supreme Court has suspended Judge Jennifer Medley for 30 days without pay for (1) a false and misleading campaign advertisement stating that her opponent was a “deadbeat dad,” and (2) her failure to disclose on her campaign finance report payments from her personal account to reimburse a woman for expenses incurred in taping a video for a campaign ad. In re Medley (Louisiana Supreme Court October 24, 2025). The Court’s decision was based on the Commission’s findings and recommendation, which were based on stipulations and a hearing officer’s report.
